I relocated to West Baltimore from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area to attend graduate school and underwent a bit of a culture shock.

West Baltimore loosely covers the area and neighborhoods surrounding the University of Maryland, as far west as Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd and as far south as the inner harbor. The area is rich in local and national historical significance but does not showcase these events and museums the way some pretentious cities tend to present themselves. The Great Blacks in Wax Museum is one of the most interesting places to visit but stands just at a corner of a normal neighborhood without much fanfare or advertising. The Walters Art Gallery, multiple performing arts centers and annual events like Artscape are national and even global tourist attractions. Nightlife in West Baltimore is limited to a few small nightclubs, sushi bars, local taverns, and a hookah lounge. A great community vibe, but not celebrity status like nearby Washington, DC.

There are a few great restaurants in West Baltimore and several options for business travelers to enjoy lunch or dinner on the go. The best cheese steaks will come from The Silver Moon carryout which serves the University community. Aside from the popular chain restaurants sprinkled about the harbor area, there is a plethora of storefront restaurants featuring some of the best soul food and ethnic cuisines anywhere in the country. Jamaican beef patties, Greek lamb gyros, and Trinidadian jerk chicken are just some of the authentic dishes that abound through this unique neighborhood.

Shopping, dining, and various entertainment options are plentiful. The business center includes federal government buildings, law offices, upscale boutiques with limited hours and designer clothing. Just a few blocks away, starving students can pick up complete outfits on the cheap from the many thrift stores and consignment shops. Whether people want to spend $200 or $20 on a dinner for two, the right restaurant exists in West Baltimore. One word of caution: although Baltimore is known for the famous Blue Crabs, the best crab restaurants are not necessarily found in West Baltimore. Read Less
