Bigger isn't always better 2 rating By Anonymous ( Nov 25, 2018) Carlsbad right now is going through a historic oil boom. The good ? If you cannot find a job, you are not really trying. The job market is so tight that even low skill jobs can get some pretty good wages. Carlsbad Caverns is nearby and definitely worth seeing. The bad ? The town ...Read More has tripled in size, and it is VERY hard to find a place to live. Rents are ridiculusly high ( $ 1400 a month for a 600 square foot apartment ), and the local motels/hotels gouge the public with New York City rates ( $400 A NIGHT in a three star motel ! ). There are numerous " man camps" throughout the city, which are trailers apon trailers streching the city's water resources to the breaking point. With the high wages, the cost of food/ basic services have gone through the roof. The locals are up in arms about this, and are resentful towards the oilfield people. The weather is decent if you like blowing dust in the Spring & 100 degree's plus temperatures from late Spring & throughout the summer going to the beginning of Fall. Noticedthat area vibes says Carlsbad averages 84 degrees- My ass !!!Oh, and did I mention that Carlsbad is floating in meth ? It would be prudent to invest in home alarm systems. The thieves have brass balls here. Cars' boats, and RV's have been known to vanish out of people's yards in broad daylight. If you desperately need a job & go to Carlsbad,be prepared to live in your car/trailer for awhile. Read Less
Overrun by Oil Population 1.5 rating By Anonymous ( Nov 24, 2018) - Drug use among teens is very high.- only 2 grocery stores.- lots and lots of oil workers everywhere.- lots and lots of mancaps around town to support oil production.- town is run down and old looking. ...Read More Read Less
Oil, Mining and Small Town Comforts 3 rating By Anonymous ( May 14, 2018) Generally, in the four years that I have lived in Carlsbad, New Mexico, it’s a pretty decent place to live. On one hand, it is a small town that finds itself quite far from big cities. This can be a problem when looking at options for entertainment and shopping. Outside of the ...Read More caverns the only thing I think it’s worth noting is that the town is filled with a diverse and friendly population.

The oilfield, mining and Hispanic cultures are mainstays of the town. As a result the city has been growing for some time now, and I don’t think anyone who wants to move here would have d a problem looking for work. The oilfield is a major employer here.

That said, if you have a family, I would recommend somewhere else. On the bases of the school system being okay and the amenities we have for younger folk may not be what dreams are may of, but for indivuals it’s a nice town with opportunity for growth and travel. Read Less
