I grew up here and lived here from when I was born until I was 19. Both my parents graduated from high school here as well and still live in Cuba City. There are a lot of positives. It is super safe and houses are affordable on a middle class income. The schools are decent, not g ...Read More
reat, but not bad. The main issue is the obsession with sports. I know we are all pretty much obsessed with sports, but this is at a whole new level. I was voted male athlete of my class, so I am not bashing the sports because I sat on the bench or had a bad experience with a coach, it was the opposite. I played three sports, for four years and never sat on the bench except my freshman and sophomore year during golf seasons (does that even count?) Anyway, the leaders of this town, as in people in powerful positions, put sports ahead of academics (they will not admit this). There are a lot of good teachers at the high school, but plenty of teachers who don't make the cut. I suppose you get that anywhere, but if the focus was on academics and not sports, it would help the students greatly. Not one student in history who graduated from this high school ever played professional sports, so I do not know why the administrators, school board and teachers think it is so important. I got special treatment at times because I was a good athlete. I am a teacher now and make sure I do not give ANYONE special treatment because that is unfair. If you like small towns, this is probably one of the better ones in the area. Good location (close to Platteville and Dubuque) and pretty low cost of living. Nice quiet place to raise a family but pretty limited academically speaking. If you have really smart kids, sending them to any small town in SW WI is a waste because of the lack of AP and honors classes. There is no diversity and no gifted programs. If you want to excel at being average, this is a good place to do it.
