If you want to live somewhere that is breath-takingly beautiful, then Custer and the area surrounding it fits the bill. It is absolutely pristine in the Black Hills.

minute drive away. You can get your groceries and most of your everyday needs in town, but often a drive to Rapid City is necessary for some items.
The inconvenience of having to drive 40 minutes to get a decent selection of wool to knit with, - - that, I can deal with. What I can not deal with is the bigotry and small-mindedness that I have found prevalent in the area. I have lived here for 4 1/2 years and I have yet to meet a non-white neighbor, other than a handful of Native Americans. I guess that, because most of the people who live in Custer have never known diversity, they fear it and that fear breeds their contempt for anyone that is non-white, non-Christian, non-Republican, non-gun-toting, etc.
I find that I miss the rich cultural mix that diversity brings, having been born and raised in NYC. I am also tired of hearing the disparaging comments that people make out here, so I am picking up and moving to California.
But, - - that's just me! You might like it out here! Like I said, - - it certainly is beautiful!
