Beautiful scenery 2.5 rating By LISue ( Jul 26, 2012) If you want to live somewhere that is breath-takingly beautiful, then Custer and the area surrounding it fits the bill. It is absolutely pristine in the Black Hills.

Custer is a very small town (approx. 1,800 people) and the closest "big" city is Rapid City, which is about a 40
...Read More minute drive away. You can get your groceries and most of your everyday needs in town, but often a drive to Rapid City is necessary for some items.

The inconvenience of having to drive 40 minutes to get a decent selection of wool to knit with, - - that, I can deal with. What I can not deal with is the bigotry and small-mindedness that I have found prevalent in the area. I have lived here for 4 1/2 years and I have yet to meet a non-white neighbor, other than a handful of Native Americans. I guess that, because most of the people who live in Custer have never known diversity, they fear it and that fear breeds their contempt for anyone that is non-white, non-Christian, non-Republican, non-gun-toting, etc.

I find that I miss the rich cultural mix that diversity brings, having been born and raised in NYC. I am also tired of hearing the disparaging comments that people make out here, so I am picking up and moving to California.

But, - - that's just me! You might like it out here! Like I said, - - it certainly is beautiful! Read Less
