Great place to be if you're a people person.. hell on earth if you're not 0.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 14, 2021) If you're a people person, rich, famous or a combination of the above, you will love it here. Lots of things to do, great nightlife, endless clubs, and so on. Best bars, clubs, and fine dining out there.

If you're none of these things, the community is terrible. Not much to do,
...Read More jobs pay terribly compared to living costs, traffic isn't super congested but can border on insane, and if you have children, you won't even find sanctuary in the suburban areas. Also, the weather is super hot and no, the lack of humidity doesn't help either. You're gonna want to move to virtually anywhere else. Read Less
the good and bad 2 rating By Anonymous ( May 20, 2021) First off I'll start with the good. The hiking areas around las vegas are amazing! There is no shortage on restaurants, you will find just about anything you are craving. If you have kids, the local parks seems nice, just make sure to go one that isn't flooded with homeless. I do ...Read More wish they would get the help they need, but unfortunately this city lacks in that department. There are also a few things for them to see like Shark Reef, the Aquarium....The state museum is pretty nice too.
The weather is nice most times of the year, but when it is hot...it is hot and when it is cold...it is cold.
Now for the bad. Good neighborhoods are very hard to find. The silverado ranch area over by pyle and spencer use to be a good neighborhood. But it has mostly turned into rental units for party people. Rental units are fine if people treated those homes as a home and not as a concert. I am not joking, there are about 30 houses in that neighborhood and at least 15-20 of them have become party homes. If you are looking for normal city noises minus the distorted BASS going through the walls all day and night......well good luck. Most homes out here get bought out by investors, mostly foreign investors so they don't care about the community at all.
Lots of people here think it is perfectly fine to practice shooting their guns in the backyard....where the surrounding homes are within 10ft of each other. The police do take it seriously but you will be quick to be an enemy of the neighbors if you complain.
The drivers out here are ridiculous....I've lived in 4 other states but this place puts those places to shame with their terrible driving skills. Good luck.
If you are into the card game community, such as magic, warhammer, etc....you will not be welcomed here. For a transient city, they sure don't like new people joining their group. It wasn't just myself that experienced it but I've heard others complain as well. Now that COVID is practically over we are going to try to form a group ourselves.
If you have allergies....stay away. This is one of the worst places to go to get away from allergies. Arizona is the better place to go for allergies. Since moving here I have been in and out of the hospital for my asthma. Once I have the opportunity I'll move away from here.
So in short, It is a great place to visit, especially for hiking, but not a good place to live. Mostly unsafe...the schools are the worse...Henderson and west side of Las Vegas seem to be the only areas where there are still good neighborhoods. It is just crazy expensive...especially around Summerlin. Read Less
So... its' alright. 2 rating By Anonymous ( Oct 13, 2020) It might very well depend in the area you live in. I had no choice however because of my financial circumstances. The education/schooling here is bad, no local will disagree with me here... so if you're moving here and have children you might want to take into consideration the schools and how exactly their system works. Anyways, I find this city a little boring and am generally attracted towards other things but I'm sure you'll be fine; there's a lot to do and several places to eat out. If you're an adult who likes to do adult things this is the place for you. It's also walkable here - I used to venture to Walmart and other stores by foot all the time. It's a different story now but it's still very much possible to exist without a car. The weather could be something else but if you are able to endure the dry heat then well, that's you, just be careful as you enter your vehicle. Sidewalks become scalding hot too so take caution as you walk your dog. It could get weirdly cold in the winter but I might be overreacting, since I'm not so used to the extremities of winter in other places. It doesn't snow here but the "dry cold" is piercing in a way. Again, I might be overreacting. I might be wrong but finding a job is kind of difficult too if you haven't had any previous work experience, or someone who could help refer you. But yea! Anyways, I can't remember everything I've wanted to say but there you go. I don't go outside often or interact much with the community so I can't say much about the city but I don't think it's that bad. Read Less

Livin Large in Las Vegas, Nevada 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Nov 17, 2014) I've lived in Las Vegas, NV for over ten years and I can sincerely say that it's amazing! Most people think of casinos and strip clubs when they think of Las Vegas. Yes, Las Vegas has all those wonderful attractions, but there is much more to the city than just its attractions. I ...Read More love how everything in Las Vegas is extremely beautiful. This includes the homes, restaurants, and the stores. Basically, the whole community is great. This city bursts with sunshine, but maybe a little too much sunshine! It can get extremely hot over there sometimes! Nevertheless, the city has several great aspects, but not every place is completely perfect.

Firstly, the attractions of Las Vegas are what makes the town so popular. The Las Vegas Casinos are widely known and are always full every single weekend, which is why so many people adore the crazy nightlife over there. However, because of the many attractions in Las Vegas like the Bellagio, the Mirage, Caesars Palace, Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, and the Hard Rock Hotel, traffic is extremely crazy and a bit dangerous especially on the weekends. This isn't much of a big deal; it is fun to go out at night, but not every single weekend. It isn't easy dealing with the craziness out there! Secondly, Las Vegas's communities are extremely friendly and safe. They are perfect for small families or couples. Most of the homes in these communities are little pricey, but I'd say that it's worth it!

Thirdly, most restaurants in Las Vegas are famous for their fancy environments and professional service, which is great, but these restaurants are extremely expensive and there aren't that many inexpensive places to eat in Las Vegas. This is a little annoying because no one wants to eat out and pay a fortune. Lastly, shopping in Las Vegas is widely famous. For example, places like the Fashion Show Mall and the Eddie Bauer Outlet are very luxuriant and expansive, which allows shoppers to have even more fun. There are several shopping centers in Las Vegas, so no one should ever have to shop in the same place more than once. Overall, Las Vegas is full of fun and action that is sure to please all. Although the traffic and prices for food and homes are crazy and shocking, it doesn't mean that you can't live there in peace and harmony. Here's my rating for the different aspects of Las Vegas: Read Less
Not a place for families, but a place for fun 1 rating By msuallison22 ( Jun 01, 2014) I've lived in Las Vegas for 10 years now and I've been trying to leave it for 7. I came here fresh out of college and for the first two years I really got to enjoy living in Las Vegas. This is hopefully a good breakdown to explain the city.

YOUNG AND SINGLE: When you are young a
...Read More nd single it is an awesome place to live. You can't have a better night life than Las Vegas. There is an adventure around every corner and in every casino!

DATING: If you eventually want to find a partner, it's a HORRIBLE place to be! Being single is only fun for so long before most of us want to find someone to be with. Well, welcome to Vegas where you get a new flock of people every day, looking for their own adventures and "fun". Lots of people into the club scene, drugs, gambling additions, alcoholics, etc. Many serial daters and difficult to find quality amongst the crazy!

MARRIED: My views on Vegas have changed since I been married and planning a family. It is not a family friendly environment. If you plan to or already have children there are some activities and some neighborhoods in Las Vegas where you can be happy for a brief time, but I would not suggest raising school age children here.

EDUCATION: If you value education this is not the place to bring your children. The schools here are the worst! The teacher to student ratio of public schools is a joke. The drop out rate is high. It really is unacceptable the way the school system is handled in Las Vegas. Your children will not get a quality education.

COMMUNITY: If you value community interactions, again...not the place for you as waving at a neighbor will likely get a stare in return. Every neighborhood has a gate around it offering a false sense of security. Houses are practically on top of each other, and no joke, you can practically reach out your window and TOUCH your neighbors house they are all so jam packed together. They are all cookie cutter homes...all of them looking like the one next door or down the street. Housing prices are insanely overpriced as well. The community of Summerlin is the only nice area in all of Las Vegas if you appreciate community, but again, it's at a cost as the HOA cost is INSANE just to live in a nice area.

So if you want a place to be for a short time to just have some fun before you settle down, then you will love Vegas. If you're at the settle down stage, then keep walking! Read Less
Las Vegas Actually Has Neighborhoods! 3 rating By drpr ( May 10, 2012) I know people think of Las Vegas as a party place, but it has actual neighborhoods, schools, parks etc. just like other cities. It also has some fabulous natural spots that visitors should seek out. Red Rock Canyon is absolutely breathtaking with views of what passes for "mounta ...Read More ins" in this area- but layered in hues of red and orange and brown- stunning against our usually clear-blue skies. Mt. Charleston is another world: it can be 20 degrees cooler, with fir trees and animals that love the woods. In the early spring there can still be snow on the mountain. If you like motorcycle riding you'll find plenty of company here, with the weather as wonderful as it usually is. If you're a golfer, you'll enjoy Vegas as well.

As a midwesterner, I don't find Vegas to be a neighborly place- which is interesting, as it's not hard to find other midwesterners here. I find too many neighborhoods that are built to encourage isolation rather than community (no porches, no sidewalks, no front yard areas). When I arrived I was impressed by the newer libraries and schools in Las Vegas, although the older libraries and schools are pretty much like all older libraries and schools in other cities- a bit more scruffy-looking. While Las Vegas is looking to increase its cultural offerings, we currently have open-air plays, free jazz in the parks, a first-edition book store and other things to interest non-gamblers/non-partiers. We could use more bookstore/cafes though!

Yes, Vegas has a great party scene, world class restaurants and shows. We also have an indie art scene event called First Friday which occurs the first Friday of each month and attracts local artists both professional and amateur, and musicians as well.

Which reminds me of the Fremont Street Experience (go at night): a spectacle of a covered sidewalk lined with glittery casinos, restaurants, kiosks selling touristy things, live bands, dancing tourists and locals, DJ'd music, an awesome sax player and all kinds of Elvii. On a schedule, the street darkens and a laser light show on the ceiling plays to loud music. You can go ziplining over Fremont as well. However, even if you did nothing but people-watch you'd still have a crazy fun time.

The first thing I noticed when I arrived in Las Vegas was the huge amount of Casino's that line the strip. From the MGM to the Mirage, there's tons of ways to win big and lose big if you're not careful! It makes you want to get out on the strip and just find new people and party the night away! It truly is a city that you can't find a good time in. The entire time I walked through casinos lobbies, I had a huge smile on my face.

The next thing you'll notice right off the bat is the climate. The climate in Las Vegas is absolutely gorgeous and perfect. It's a cool 80 degree heat but with virtually no humidity at all. This is the perfect weather to walk around in a t-shirt and shorts and feel comfortable. Then you could perhaps make your way over to one of the shows that Las Vegas has to offer. Las Vegas is notorious for acts such as Siegfred and Roy, Carrot Top, Wayne Newton and many more. Theses shows are exactly what people come to Las Vegas for and what keeps this town booming. It goes without saying that Las Vegas has some of the best bars, clubs and nightlife in the world. But what people don't realize is that the entertainment and restaurants are world class as well. I ate at Tao in the Venetian and tried the lobster fried rice. Food was great and the atmosphere is fun as well. But be warned, it turns into more of a bar as the night goes on.

The party never stops in Las Vegas. Most places throughout the city are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I have a lot of fun in Las Vegas every time I go, but it is definitely a place you need to handle with moderation. After 4 or 5 days, I am always ready to go home.

One thing I don't like about the city of Las Vegas is how hot it gets in the summer. I made the mistake of traveling there in August one year, and it was scorching hot. Even at nighttime, the temperature never dipped below 90 degrees F. It felt like a sauna, even at 10pm at night! Read Less

      vs

      Las Vegas, NV

"Viva Las Vegas" is a phrase that is known around the world, but more and more people are started to call the city home for reasons other than the action that takes place on The Strip. Vegas has a population that has exceeded 600,000, and the city continues to expand to the east and the south with construction crews working busily to accommodate a large number of transplants from California. From the moment that the first casino received its gambling license in 1931, people have been moving to the oasis in the desert in search of a big win.

Home prices in Vegas are relatively affordable, and there are typically a large number of homes on the market to choose from. Summerlin is one of the city's newer areas, and it is an area that is especially popular with families. The Arts District is a trendy area that is attractive to young working professionals who are looking for something that is unique. Peccole Ranch is a great place to live for those high-income earners who are looking for a gated lifestyle within easy reach of the city.

Getting around Las Vegas is relatively straightforward is I-15 cuts through the heart of the city and offers easy access to the main points of interest. Las Vegas Transit has been shuttling passengers since it opened its doors in the 1960s, and it can get you around the city in a hurry. Walking is also a popular choice for movement in the city as people stroll up and down The Strip at all hours of the day and night. Folks also walk on the 34 golf courses that the city has to offer.

While people think of casinos and wedding halls when they think of Las Vegas, there are other entertainment options that locals love to flock to. The Las Vegas Golden Knights made a surprise run to the NHL Finals during their inaugural season, and the city has fallen in love with this sport that some would find out of place in the heat of the desert. The Las Vegas Raiders are the town's newest attraction, and fans are looking forward to an exciting style of ball that will bring the city even more visitors during busy football Sundays.

The cost of living in Las Vegas is relatively affordable thanks to all of the tax that the city is able to bring in from the tourism sector. Residents of Nevada do not have to pay state income tax. Las Vegas is also home to the University of Nevada Las Vegas for parents of school age children who are looking to provide a higher education option to their children.
