Great location to get to Baltimore or DC but there are still many challanges. 2.5 rating By Patrick Dant ( Apr 02, 2017) The area is a weird mix of high end condos and low end apartments and older homes. Shopping has recently had an up turn in the new Laurel shopping center on route one, but there are signs of aging in most other sections of Laurel, with a turn toward international and Latino shopp ...Read More ing. Violence is high in the city and surrounding areas. Laurel is in Prince Georges county which is one of the poorest and worst run countries in Maryland. Country run schools are some of the worst in Maryland as well, but there are a few good private schools near Laurel as well.City taxes are high with little value. Condos in the area can be very expensive between city, state, and county taxes, the usually high condo fees. the Laurel hospital is about to go out of business. If it does stay open it will be a downsized with likely no emergency room service; however, medical support is very high in Maryland overall. Between John Hopkins network and other research or educational hospitals there are many choices for medical care.Since Laurel sits on the I95 corridor, it should be expected that community would be diverse, or individualized toward the larger state communities in Baltimore and D.C. What little community Laurel had in the past has been lost multiple cultures and the fragmentation from a high number of illegals immigrants. Demographics do not show the high level of Hispanics living in Laurel MD (not sure why), and the number of illegal immigrants is growing, impacting businesses that tailor to Hispanic cultural needs (i.e. food, clothing, etc.). Some demographics show African-American being the highest followed by Hispanic totaling a super majority. I have not seen an indication of either an African-American or Hispanic culture driving the general community. Most people tend toward the individualized lifestyles and coexist with those around them. Public schools race still drives much of the community and associations. Race based violence has always been high in Maryland so that is nothing new. what is new are the emergence of MS-13 gangs both in the schools and in some violence reported.Laurel is a great place to live if you plan on working and socializing outside of your home town along the I95 corridor. Just be very carful of the places you live since some places have become violent even to live in. Read Less
