Not much to Longview 3 rating By Anonymous ( May 04, 2020) I've lived in Longview 8 years as of this writing. I only moved here for a job, not because I really wanted to live here. When I retire I will blow out of here as fast as a "straight-line" wind. By far the best thing about Longview is the weather. It's mostly mild year round, pre ...Read More tty hot in July and August but never really cold in the winter and little if any snow. Crime is not as bad as this report makes it sound. The highest number and worst crimes are in the southern part of the city (south of downtown), the poorest part of Longview. Schools are very good in all the districts. The park system is also pretty good and growing. The Amtrak Texas Eagle stops here twice a day during normal, waking hours. It's nice to take the train to Dallas for an overnight stay. Dallas is about 120 miles west following I-20. Almost all food and shopping is in the north part of town including one mediocre mall. The cost of housing is good. You can get a nice ranch style, about 1,500sf, for around $165,000 but they are often older and need updating in the kitchen and bathrooms. For that money you usually get a big yard with lots of mature trees. Longview is in what they call the "Piney Woods" for a reason, tons of Pine trees everywhere. The bad news is, it's a boring place to live. Almost nothing to do. No really great bars and only one "night club" type of place and you better like country music and doin' the Texas Two-step if you go there. If I were between 21 and 35, I would HATE this city. The only place for young adults to hang out is the local microbrewery which does actually make good beer, or the local coffee shop (not Starbucks). There are very few white-collar jobs and the good ones are for engineers and other professionals. The local economy is VERY dependent on the oil & gas industry. As I write this, we're in the middle of a pandemic (COVID-19) and a crashing petroleum commodities market. So, who knows what will happen here in the future. It may well be a, "Last person out, turn off the lights" scenario. Who should live here? someone who is retired, really loves religion (there are TONS of churches), someone who is very conservative (this is a very "Red" area), and someone who loves a very quiet, do-nothing lifestyle. Migrating to East Texas 5 rating By Jacobsteele ( Jan 16, 2017) Full disclosure here, I'm a Realtor. So, yeah I'm probably a little biased :)I'll tell you what I see as far as the market is concerned in Longview and East Texas. I have many clients moving to Longview from all over the US. I have two active clients right now from Chicago, one f ...Read More rom Corpus Christi, one from Austin and another from Dallas. I moved here from Austin and have family in Longview that came from Fort Worth. Clearly we have a migration. Most of my clients moving here from other locations are business owners and retirees. They've sold a home is another area, mostly in strong seller's markets like Austin. These folks are getting top dollar for their homes in other areas and buying in Longview for value. Real Estate prices in East Texas haven't caught up with other areas in Texas. This is one reason why my parents moved here and many other families. Another reason for our new residents making to move is healthcare. Longview is a small city with two large hospitals and dozens of clinics/specialists. Making our city a comforting place for those who older and need access to medical professionals. Nightlife? Compared to larger cities, as you would expect, there's not much to speak of. Which in turn makes the community and family life here a little cleaner. We have a better daylife scene than nightlife. This area of Texas is meant for enjoying outdoor activities. It's beautiful here. The pine trees are incredible. We have multiple hiking trails and a few incredible mountain bike trails. If you're a golfer or love fishing, Longview has you covered! Get your boat out on the Lake O'Pines, Caddo Lake, Martin Creek Lake, Lake Fork and many others in East Texas. Jacob Steelewww.jacobsteele.com Read Less
Longview, TX - Loads of History 4 rating By Anonymous ( Aug 03, 2010) Having three kids is rewarding yet exhausting. You would think that once I have time to get away, I would appreciate it. Well, in my cases, the only time I'm away from my family is when I go to visit my mother in Longview, Texas. Longview is an interesting place. It's interesting ...Read More in the sense that it's the epitome of old school Texas. There's a lot of history in Longview, which includes Longview Heritage Walls, a post office that was built during the New Deal, and many other structures dating back over 100 years. Walking down the street in Downtown Longview feels as though the advancements in technology have ceased and you're in a completely different time and place. If you enjoy tradition and history, Longview is the perfect place to be.

I visit my mother in Longview several times per year. It's always during one of the annual events. These events include the East Texas Boat, RV, and Camping Expo, the Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally, AlleyFest, the Turnip Green Festival, and the Great Texas Balloon Race. I used to bring my kids to AlleyFest, but now they're ‘too cool' for it. My favorite event has always been the Great Texas Balloon Race. The best hot air balloon pilots in the world come to Longview for this race. It's taken very seriously, and it's an incredible sight.

If you plan on coming to the city of Longview for a vacation, there are a few things to keep in mind. One, you better like barbeque. Two, the events are the attractions. Three, it's all about tradition. Read Less
