Marengo, Illinois is just the present-day U.S. on an unincorporated 'town' scale. In other words, it's a horrible town. Most of the residents, employers and people who work there are mean, cliquey, repressed and passive-aggressive (I have met four actual people in Marengo who fit ...Read More
this description). Everyone here is also a shut-in, too. Of course, there are some cool, normal people here, but they're mainly the high schoolers and other young adults you might occasionally talk to every now and then at work or something. There aren't enough jobs here, either. The few places you'll get a job at are all family places run by people who have the revolving door thing going on and who run their businesses too cheaply, or a few corporate chain places with the same thing going on in them. Marengo doesn't have any places to meet new people in, either, aside from like three bars. And it doesn't have enough sidewalks! Marengo might try to come across as being a friendly small country town, but it isn't any of those things. It's just a truck stop you move to when you don't have enough money and have a job in another nearby town. (I also have to add that Marengo is terrible to live in when you're just out of school and everything. Again, you move here to move out). I'm a young adult who's lived in Marengo for more than five years now. This place is really bad for your psyche in the long run. Don't move here if you can help it.
