Milton, ON
Milton, now part of the Greater Toronto Area in southern Ontario, is a popular commuter town located just a 40 minute drive - or a convenient GO transit connection - away from downtown Toronto. Read this Milton Livability guide know about the best the city has to offer, for yourself and for your entire family.
Historically speaking Milton was an industrial centre with a flourishing lumber and railway industry, but in modern Milton, most employment opportunities are in the food and automotive industries. Today, Milton is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada and has quite a young population as inexpensive rent and low cost of living drive a new generation of entrepreneurs and young professionals to the city. Slowly but surely, the influx of this young crowd is slowly but steadily turning Milton into a vibrant, multicultural town with a character all its own.
One of the main reasons behind Milton’s steadily rising immigration rates is the low rents and inexpensive housing. In addition to being significantly cheaper than in Toronto, living spaces are generally larger and located in safe communities with abundant green spaces. For this reason, Milton is popular for professionals who work downtown, particularly those with families. Instead of having to make do with a cramped apartment downtown, you can have a spacious semi-detached house for roughly the same price. The most popular residential areas include Bowes and Clarke, newly developed neighbourhoods that offer modern amenities and facilities, as well as the older neighbourhood of Mountainview. As the name suggests, this area, although on the expensive side, has stunning views of the Niagara Escarpment.
As any Milton guide will tell you, Milton and its surrounding areas offer a wealth of recreational activities situated against a backdrop of stunning nature. The Rattlesnake Point Conservation area is a particular resident favourite, great for hiking and viewing awe-inspiring bold-faced cliffs and hidden caves. The Niagara Escarpment trails in the Kelso Conservation Area, as well as the Bruce Trail, are other favourite spots for hiking and biking. However, Milton’s natural abundance isn’t just for admiring from afar. In fact you can get up close to truly “taste” nature’s bounty by picking pumpkins at the seasonal Stonehaven farmer’s market. The farmers’ market on Main Street in downtown Milton also offers fresh produce throughout the year.
