Great place to raise a family - great schools, outdoor activities and safe 5 rating By Anonymous ( Mar 03, 2021) Mountain Lakes is like a throwback to the '70s where kids safely walk and bike to school and friends' houses and play outdoors. It's a very social community where neighbors know each other and help out when someone is sick. The public schools are small for personalized attentio ...Read More n and achieve top rankings consistently. Very few attend private schools because the public schools are so strong. They are on par with the selective enrollment magnet schools that only take top students. A very high proportion of graduates are accepted into Ivy League and highly selective colleges. It is cool to be smart here. The sports teams are outstanding. The lacrosse, football, track and field, rowing and swimming teams are perennial powerhouses with multiple state championships for each. More recently the tennis and girls soccer teams are excelling. Briarcliff Middle school achieve a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence rating. The adult population is well educated with approx 86% having college undergraduate degrees are higher. Most are in white collar or professional fields, many are business owners and a very high percentage worked from home even before COVID. The town has 5 lakes and a large county park that are the centerpieces of outdoor recreation. The swim team practices in one of the lakes during summer, kids learn to sail on the lakes. Residents enjoy kayaking, sailing, swimming and hanging out at the beach at the lakes that are restricted to resident use, plus biking, tennis, jogging and walking. There are miles of trails in the Tourne Park for hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing. Residents turn out in droves when the lakes freeze for hockey and ice skating. It is primarily a residential community, with very little traffic because there are with no major commercial stores in the town, which is only two miles long. However, groceries, two downtown shopping districts, and shopping malls are just 2-12 minutes away. The restaurants in town are excellent, but there are only a handful since the town is small. A wide variety of restaurants are available in the adjacent towns that are 5 minutes away. The Lakeland bus has a regular route through town to get you into NYC in 45-60 mins depending on traffic. Train service to NYC is available in Mtn Lakes but faster if you catch it in Denville as that is a direct line. There are a sizeable group of international residents who relocate here for 3-5 year terms with working for global companies. The town is majority caucasian, with a sizeable Asian/Indian population, and v. small percentage of latinos, Read Less
Why would anyone move here? 0.5 rating By Anonymous ( Feb 19, 2019) This town is very beautiful but lacks in just about everything, there are two restaurants in the entire town and the majority of people that live here suck so bad. Everyone here is the same there is absolutely no ethnicity and the cops suck ...Read More Read Less
