The primary industry for Onalaska was lumber. The name, Onalaska refers to an Aleutian island meaning "Pleasures of Hope." Fishing is a popular pastime with the Black River, La Crosse River and Sand Lake Coulee Creek nearby. The Gullikson tennis players are from Onalaska.
A popular restaurant in Onalaska, Wisconsin is the Red Pines Bar and Grill. The cost of living is relatively moderate. There is not much crime and schools are pretty good. You won't find a whole lot of shopping or night life. If you want a good photograph, check out the big sunfish sign welcoming you to Onalaska, Wisconsin on Highway 35. Fishing is big here.
