Saanich, BC
Saanich is a district municipality on Vancouver Island that is dissected in two by the Patricia Bay Highway. It is the eighth most populous city in British Columbia and the largest city on Vancouver Island. Still, it is a suburb of Victoria, though it is so much more than that. This is why it is often listed as one of the top places to live in the province, which has a lot to do with its stunning topography. Saanich boasts some great beaches, a beautiful coastline and numerous lakes, as well as urban sprawl.
There are two districts in Saanich, both of which have numerous communities. Most of these are residential areas of various income brackets, although the core of the city (Uptown) is largely commercialised. Neighbouring Tillicum Village and Gorge-Tillicum are two of the trendiest areas of the city to live in due to their great shopping and recreational centres. As well, they are set right along the Gorge Waters. Another gem is the seaside neighbourhood of Gordon Head due to its many parks, recreational facilities and schools. This is where the University of Victoria is situated, making it a popular area for younger residents.
Many people choose to retire in Saanich, as it is a beautiful city with lots to offer. It also has a low crime rate and a low unemployment rate, making it appealing for families. There are schools all over the city, as well as the University of Victoria and the two main campuses of Camosun College. Most residents in Saanich own a private house, which is another great thing about living in the city, as the majority of apartments are within a lovely converted house, making them quite cozy and welcoming. This just adds charm to the city, which, combined with its stunning surroundings, makes it a highly liveable city.
Numerous bus routes travel through Saanich, making it quite easy to get around. These are all linked to Victoria, which attracts commuters that work in BC’s capital city. Still, any Saanich local will tell you that you don’t ever have to leave the city, as it has everything that you could want in a city that call home. There are numerous shopping malls, sandy beaches and great parks, some of which have extensive hiking trails. Don’t forget to go to Mount Tolmie Park for a fabulous view of the whole of Greater Victoria, to visit the historic Dominion Astrophysical Observatory or to explore the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary.
