Known as a cultural melting pot and one of the most diverse cities on the planet, Toronto is Canada’s largest metropolis. Toronto is renowned for its vibrant, bustling atmosphere, world-class arts and entertainment venues, historical sites, museums and thousands of restaurants serving up any cuisine imaginable. Toronto has a never ending list of activities and new places to explore. Toronto loves its festivals and annually hosts exciting events such as Caribana, The Honda Indy, NXNE and Nuit Blanche which attract tourists from all over the globe. The patchwork of over two hundred communities, each having its own style and unique character has earned Toronto the nickname of ‘The City of Neighbourhoods.'
Toronto is one of the most expensive cities in Canada by cost of living standards and is also one of the priciest in the country to buy or rent in. The cost of homes or rentals can vary significantly based on location, neighbourhood, and proximity to the downtown core. It can be helpful to determine what your key ‘must haves’ are before you begin your search, such as close proximity to a 24-hour transportation line or living in a condo that offers a variety of features and amenities to help choose a suitable neighbourhood for your budget.
The good news is that Toronto has an extensive transportation network that includes the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), so getting around the city is a breeze. The coverage spans the entire city and includes rapid transit rail lines, streetcars, buses and subway trains. The TTC is also connected to multiple other municipalities’ transportation networks within the Greater Toronto Area. In addition, the Government of Ontario runs a commuter train and bus system called GO Transit that provides high speed service between many cities in the GTA to Union Station, located in the downtown core of Toronto’s financial district.
Toronto is considered one of the safest big cities in the world and always near the top of the list for the safest major cities in North America. Most of Toronto’s neighbourhoods are considered very safe, having said that, there are some neighbourhoods that you might want to avoid. Be sure to do your research prior to securing your new home or rental so you don’t get stuck in a high crime area.
Wherever you choose to live in Toronto, take the opportunity to explore the unique aspects of the city. Funky areas like Kensington market or distinguished neighbourhoods that include Little Italy, Chinatown and Little India, offer the best of the city’s cultural and multicultural aspects.
