I visit Vancouver, Washington several times a year, for conventions and cultural events. In fact, Vancouver is only about a 15-20 minute drive from Portland as the Interstate Bridge connects the two, over the Columbia River. The personality of Vancouver is vibrant, artsy, outdoor ...Read More
sy and environmentally friendly. There are recycling containers everywhere and people use bicycles for transportation more often than I've seen in other metropolitan areas.
Much of the shopping, dining and nightlife in the city is actually in Portland, which is really just 15 minutes away. Vancouver has more outdoor activities and historical sites, so the two communities together make for a great destination. The green hills and seaside location make for a relaxing, clean and fresh environment. Vancouver's recreational lakes, parks, hiking and bicycle trails are great for the traveler who enjoys the outdoors. Spawning salmon and birds of prey are a treat not many other cities can provide. In the summer, water sports are also popular. Visitor can swim, sail, scuba dive, ski and even wind surf. Overall, the city of Portland is a great destination.

Compare Vancouver, WA Livability
Vancouver, WA
While Vancouver is located in Washington State, it is actually considered to be one of the largest suburbs of the Portland Metro Area. This proximity to one of Oregon's largest cities makes Vancouver an attractive location to live for those who want a small-town feel with all of the amenities of a major metro area. With a population of over 175,000, the secret about Vancouver is spreading well beyond the Pacific Northwest. Vancouver is one of Washington's five largest cities, and its housing market offers a more affordable alternative than Seattle or Tacoma.
Another plus for life in Vancouver when compared to Seattle or Portland is that traffic is not nearly as much of a problem in Vancouver. Interstate 5 is the lifeblood of the city, and it offers easy access to the downtown Portland area. C-TRAN is the city's public transit system that is busy each day of the year shuttling passengers to stops located all around the city. Cycling is also a popular mode of transportation for a large number of the city's residents, and it seems like more and more people are starting to take advantage of the city's trail system each year.
Vancouver has a military legacy that is on display at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. This is a location where Pioneers originally set up shop in order to protect the area and establish a community. Today visitors can learn about the way of life of the city's founders. Kelley Point Park is a great place where you can spend a Saturday afternoon enjoying a stroll around the lake or a picnic lunch with the family. Pearson Air Museum highlights the achievements of flight, and it is a fun place to take the kids to show them an airplane up close and personal.
Vancouver's top job opportunities are in the health care and education sectors. The public schools in the area employ over 3,500 workers, and PeaceHealth employs over 4,000. Those who are looking to rent or buy a home in Vancouver should look for properties in the Officers Row, Burton Ridge, and Fisher's Landing East neighborhoods. These areas of the city offer beautiful homes with character. They also give students access to some of the city's top public schools.
Vancouver's downtown area is an exciting place to shop, dine, and unwind. Lapellah and Element's Restaurant are a couple of the most popular dining establishments in town that do a great job of incorporating fresh and exciting ingredients into culinary experiences that cannot be found elsewhere. Vancouver is a great place to live, and it gives you access to the Pacific Ocean, Seattle, and the beautiful scenery that are part of Vancouver's appeal.
