Great Area For Retirement 4.5 rating By Anonymous ( Jun 06, 2021) Just the right size for my wife and I !
The largest community between state capitol Harrisburg and the New York state line, and State College (Penn State football) to the west and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to the east, each a little over an hour away.
So, most of the amenities of a
...Read More larger city, two great hospitals, two colleges, Lycoming College and Penn College (an affiliate of Penn State University), excellent array of restaurants, vibrant nightlife and music scene for it's size, active arts community with galleries and art fairs, and the Community Arts Center draws an array of national touring musicians. Two good blues bars, a couple of country music bars, Sunday jazz brunches, and a mini blues festival each New Years, and the three day Billtown Blues Festival each June. First Fridays are a monthly, seasonal downtown street fair. Every August, we host the Little League World Series for three weeks, complete with parades and parties, and an MLB team playing in the second oldest minor league ballpark in America. Great bus service area wide (despite contrasting review), clear air and water, no traffic (except during Little League).
Home to lots of small manufacturers, Overhead Door, ShopVac, Axeman Anderson Boilers, Le Clerc Protein Bars, and many more. Still a center of gas extraction and pipelines.
Lowes is here, Home Depot is coming, Sam's Club (but no Costco, our biggest pet peeve), and most chain restaurants and retailers. Walkable, shop-able downtown. Brand new airport ten minutes from downtown with daily flights to Philadelphia.
Gateway city to the Pennsylvania Wilds, the area to the north and west on state maps with scattered small towns and fewer roads, and all the outdoor recreation that implies. The Susquehanna River runs through town, and is great for water skiing and fishing, and we enjoy occasional excursions on the Hiawatha stern wheeler, dinner and concert cruises. Lycoming and Loyalsock Creeks bracket the city, with Muncy Creek a short distance east. All are very clean, canoe and kayak navigable much of their lengths, and fly-fishable. I swim in the Loyalsock a couple times a week in the summer, great way to cool off. All of this is within a 15-20 minute radius. Pick your own berries, apples, peaches, and corn immediately at the edge of town. Saturday Farmers market downtown seven months of the year.
December through February can be cold and snowy, but bearable. We leave town in March, as it's the dreary month, not quite winter, not quite spring. September and October are just about perfect. And beautiful. Nice long three month autumns.

Williamsport: A Small Pennsylvania City 3.5 rating By Anonymous ( May 14, 2018) Williamsport is a small city in Pennsylvania that is pretty far away from any big cities. Living here can be pretty boring since there isn't much to do right in Williamsport and you'll probably have to drive somewhere else. It's pretty easy to afford a decent place here but on th ...Read More e other hand, the job market isn't very great and doesn't pay too well either.

There's a basic bus system you can use but it doesn't cover much of the city, and you'll be better off with a car or bicycle. You'll have to go all over town when it comes to shopping too, but there are enough stores to cover the basics. If you're looking for something cheap and fun to do, there is Brandon Park. I think it's the best area in the city and a fun place to hang out with a couple friends or your dog if you have one. Williamsport is an alright city if you want a quiet life, but it can feel too limiting for younger folks. Read Less
